Position: Clinical Resource Nurse

Department:   Mental Health - Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Inpatient Unit (CAPIS)

Status: Permanent Full-time

Hours: Monday to Friday - (7.5 hour days) Hours subject to change based on operational needs.

This is what you'll be doing:

  • Providing clinical leadership in the care of patients and families in the Child & Adolescent inpatient unit, you will work collaboratively with the interdisciplinary team to meet optimal patient and departmental needs.  As part of the leadership team, you will work to create a patient and family centered environment, with an emphasis on patient safety, evidence-based clinical practice and building a positive environment for patients, families, medical staff and interdisciplinary colleagues exemplifying our Respectful Workplace Policy.
  • You will facilitate evidence-based nursing practice and coordinate the day-to-day clinical operations including oversight of equipment and supplies and assigning nursing/allied health resources according to patient acuity and staff skills.  You will monitor workload throughout the shift while seeking and providing learning opportunities for staff. You will perform direct patient care activities according to the needs of the unit.
  • Working with both internal and external partners you will attend, bed meetings, leadership meeting and other committees as appropriate.  You will identify areas for improvement and participate in the development and monitoring of quality indicators.  You may participate in the recruitment and retention of staff, interviewing and coaching as needed in collaboration with the Patient Care Manager. You will participate in various quality initiative projects as they arise.
  • The CRN role must function as a part of a multidisciplinary team providing individual and group assessment of severely ill child and adolescent psychiatric patients. He/she must be competent to recommend treatment modalities in mental health and implement nursing interventions. This requires mandatory initiation, development, evaluation and revision of psychiatric care paths, specific to each patient.
  • The incumbent must be competent to carry out a mental status examination and provide mental health teaching to patients and families as indicated.
  • Essential to the role is a strong knowledge of all pertinent legislation and the application of it in order to advocate effectively for patients suffering from mental health disorders.
  • Fundamental knowledge of children and adolescent mental health illnesses, addictions and current treatment trends enhance the ability to interface with the multidisciplinary team, facilitating efficient discharge and follow up.

  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Current BCLS certification required at time of hire.
  • BScN required.
  • Acute clinical experience and C.N.A. certification in psychiatry, designation or a willingness to obtain in the next 2 years.
  • Must have recent child & adolescent inpatient or outpatient psychiatric experience.
  • Ability to establish a therapeutic alliance with clients.
  • Previous clinical leadership experience preferred.
  • Charge Nurse or In Charge experience required
  • Excellent teaching, interpersonal and public relations skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills at the unit and organizational levels
  • Ability to demonstrate empathy and understanding to this population mandatory.
  • Team player who projects a positive, non-judgmental attitude.
  • Excellent problem solving and conflict/crisis resolution skills.
  • Able to work as a team member with peers, Program Leader, Patient Care Managers, Professional Practice Clinician, Physicians, and other multidisciplinary professionals
  • Working knowledge of the Mental Health Act of Ontario & other related legislation.
  • Nonviolent crisis intervention training would be an asset.
  • Competent knowledge of standards of Mental Health Nursing and Scope of practice
  • Knowledge and understanding of current psychiatric medication treatment trends.
  • Good employment and attendance record.

Salary:  $34.43 to $48.49
