Status: Unpaid Co-op placement - Fall 2018 Starting in September

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 hour days preferred; flexible times

Site: Oakville (travel to all sites as required)

Halton Healthcare is a progressive, multi-hospital healthcare organization comprised of three community hospitals - Georgetown Hospital (GH), Milton District Hospital (MDH) and Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH).  Together these hospitals provide healthcare services to more than 325,000 residents in the communities of Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills. Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital moved locations from its southeast Oakville legacy site to a new state-of-the-art 1.6 million sq. ft. facility in December 2015. In May 2015 Halton Healthcare celebrated the start of construction of a 330,000 sq. ft expansion of Milton District Hospital, which is projected to be completed in spring 2017. The Communications & Public Affairs department is interested in speaking to Corporate Communications students who would be interested in an internship at Halton Healthcare to assist with the internal and external communications activities related to these two construction projects.

Skills and Attributes needed: 

  • Must be currently enrolled in a post-secondary program in a related field (ex. Public Relations, Media Studies, Corporate Communications) in which an internship is a mandatory component
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Creative, some graphic design experience helpful
  • Excellent computer skills, including knowledge of social media
  • Must be detail oriented, team player and technologically savvy
  • Demonstrated strong news judgment, excellent writing skills and ability to source information and experience covering general assignments and features
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and focus on multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
  • Ability to use a camera and any experience taking pictures and shooting/editing video would be an asset
  • A working knowledge of the Town of Oakville (events, community groups, media, etc.) will be considered an asset
  • Valid driver’s license and access to a car is required

Field of Studies:

  • Journalism, Corporate Communications, Media Studies (College or University Level)

Accountability: 

  • This position will report to the Director, Communications & Public Affairs. The incumbent will work closely with other members of the Communications & Public Affairs team.

Responsibilities include:

The primary responsibility of this position is to assist in the implementation of both internal and external communications projects including:

  • Assisting with the creation and development of content for social media outlets, e-newsletter and other items as directed
  • Researching, organizing information for use in marketing projects
  • Contributing web content, both video and written.
  • Providing administrative, graphics, and production support for marketing materials
  • Draft basic communications materials including news releases, fact sheets and other materials as directed.
  • Attend team meetings and be willing to contribute to other team activities as requested
  • Contribute to photograph and video library as requested

Other:

  • Assist with and participate in special projects
  • Other duties as assigned
