Position:  Professional Practice Clinician – Intensive Care Unit

Status:  Permanent Fulltime

Hours:  Primarily Days.  Will require flexibility to meet staff needs, e.g. may need to work select evening, night or weekend hours for purposes of orientation and education.

This is what you'll be doing:

The Professional Practice Clinician (PPC) undertakes clinical, teaching and staff development responsibilities for the Intensive Care Unit and the organization, focusing on the professional practice and clinical development of staff as well as but not limited to the following:

  • Maintains a current knowledge base regarding evidence based and best practice for the ICU patient population, draws upon contemporary evidence and/or research-based practice methods and standards; and participates in quality improvement activities.
  • Collaborates with the the Program Director, the Patient Care Manager of the ICU, the Chief Nursing Officer and Professional Practice Leader and fellow PPCs, to plan, implement and evaluate activities related to staff and patient education.
  • Develops, reviews and revises policies and procedures related to professional practice and clinical care, and provides supporting education and evaluation. 
  • Develops and monitors quality indicators within the program and actively participates in quality improvement activities.
  • s a member of the Office of Professional Practice, the PPC collaborates with other PPCs to plan and organize the Nursing Orientation Program, coordinate and assist with program quality management (audits), conduct follow-up activities, and plan and implements educational initiatives at program and corporate levels.
  • As a member of the Management Team, the PPC participates in organization-wide management activities.
  • Provides administrative back up to the Patient Care Manager of the ICU in her absence. 
  • Participates in regional initiatives that have a direct relationship to the program.  Facilitates and promotes staff to attain/retain recognized professional credentials as it relates to their positions in the Program.

  • Current Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • BScN required
  • Masters Degree in Nursing, Education or Health Administration required
  • CNA Speciality Certification in Critical Care preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical experience in Critical Care required
  • Experience as an educator including the ability to design and deliver programs
  • Knowledge of Critical Care Standards of Practice, nursing best practice guidelines and clinical management tools
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and leadership skills
  • Innovative, creative and professional role model
  • Ability to prioritize/organize multiple projects with strict deadlines
  • Ability to work autonomously
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Visio
  • Able to meet the physical demands of the position
  • Satisfactory employment and attendance record required
